The Las Vegas Summer League has started and the Grizzlies did not disappoint!
Within the last minute, we saw a technical, a huge mental lapse turnover, a clutch and-one, and goal tending, just to finish with A HUGE AND-ONE by Wayne Selden!
Is anxiety due to a Summer League game normal?
The Grizzlies sealed the win against the Washington Wizards on Saturday afternoon with a 91-88 victory lead by 28 points by Wayne Selden.
As a team, the Grizzlies looked incredible the way they should with a roster of returning players. Throughout the game there was a lot of defensive pressure full court and it looks like Coach Cyprien is trying to continue the Grit and Grind mentality through his coaching style.
Wayne Selden looked great today, showing a quick, smooth jump shot, attacking the rim, reactive defense, and the vision to find the open teammate. Out of all the players on the court tonight, he easily looked the most NBA ready. Clutch shot after clutch shot, it all looked too easy for Selden. It’ll be surprising if he plays the full Summer League since he is easily above his competition thus far.
Wade Baldwin had the rust on him early, but was easily able to find his shot and control his passes as the game went along. Even though his finishes were not has smooth as they should be, it was good seeing the aggressive mentality when he was handling the ball.
Deyonta Davis was a rebounding machine on the court and ran the floor beautifully. Even though he didn’t get as many touches as we would have liked, he did rotate without the ball and off screens to perfection for touches he first Summer League game.
During a majority of the game the Grizzlies held a solid lead, but let the Wizards come back through offensive rebounds, slow rotational defense during half court sets, and a handful of careless turnovers. This is something we would like to change, but are expected problems dealing with younger teams.
Rade Zagorac looked very stiff during his first game and nerves could be a huge factor why. He did show signs of his abilities, but defensively, shooting, and even boxing out he seemed a step behind and out of touch this game. Expect this to change.
Ivan Rabb was unable to play tonight due to an ankle injury, he will be out at least 3 games.
Dillon Brooks looked strong on offensive, finding his jumper early and showing us why the Grizzlies drafted him in the first place. He also showed excellent positioning and rebounding for a wing player. His only fault during the game was being slower on defense, having a few opponents blow by him.
Kobi Simmons did very solid his first game. After receiving criticism for entering the draft too early, Simmons showed flashes of ball handling and passing abilities that helped make him a 5 star recruit in high school.
